STOJNIC, A DAY IN THE BREAKAWAY. GANDIN KEEPS THE MAGLIA VERDE PISTACCHIO

The Serbian rider dreams until 12 km from the finish. Gandin still leads the KOM classification on the eve of the queen stage with arrival on Mount Etna

Third day out of three in the breakaway at Il Giro di Sicilia for the Team corratec who saw the Serbian Veljko Stojnic in action in the attack of the day, which later became decisive.

After a troubled start to the season, between recovering from a serious injury occurred in 2021 and the flu that knocked him out in March, the Serbian rider moved out of the pack after 15km of race in an action by six riders.

Stojnic resisted in the leading group until 12 km from the finish when Fran Miholjević launched the decisive attack to which neither the Serbian nor the other two fugitives who remained at front, Alessandro Iacchi and Federico Burchio, were able to respond.

A few minutes after the stage finish Stojnic said: “I was unsure about my condition today, I wanted to go on the breakaway but when I tattacked for the first time I thought I wasn’t feeling great. After 10km I attacked again and the breakaway went. It was a strong wind against all day, but when we passed the 5′ lead we all believed we could reach the finish. We worked well but in the end only Miholjević managed to stay ahead and win. I’m happy with my condition because I only did seven days on my bike after the flu I caught in March at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi and Bartali.”

41″ behind the stage winner came the group of the GC favorites in which Marco Murgano was once again while in the other classifications Stefano Gandin defended the Maglia Verde Pistacchio of the KOM classification.

Tomorrow grand finale on Mount Etna, anything can happen but we are convinced that our young rider will be able to animate also the queen stage of Il Giro di Sicilia.
