STEFANO GANDIN ONE MORE DAY IN GREEN
The Vicentino rider, who attacked with Masotto, was the last surrender in the breakaway group. Murgano ended just after the GC favourites
Another positive day for Team corratec which also animated the second stage of Il Giro di Sicilia won by Damiano Caruso.
The team directed by Francesco Frassi and Serge Parsani has in fact included two riders, Stefano Gandin and Giulio Masotto, in the breakaway of nine men who opened a gap after 30 km from the start.
Stefano Gandin, who was holding the Maglia Verde Pistacchio, won the KOM of the day, consolidating his advantage in the dedicated ranking. Not happy with all this, after attacking in view of the KOM, Gandin continued in an exciting solo attack that the group mended only 8 km from the finish.
Here what he said few minutes after the end of today’s stage: “The goal was to keep the jersey by taking the points available at the Enna KOM. I had a flat tyre at the beginning of the stage but luckily my teammate Masotto helped me to bridge to the lead group. After the KOM I went straight, I knew that the group could come back but I gave it all. Let’s see if it will be possible to keep the jersey until the end, it will be tough since the last stage awards a lot of points but if the legs are good I’ll definitely try.”
In the demanding final of the stage Marco Murgano did well as he held the wheels of the GC leader before ending in 23rd position. For the young Ligurian rider, who in the general classification stands now in 20th position 27″ behind Caruso, a good result even taking into account the health problems that had hit him in recent weeks.
Tomorrow 3rd stage of Il Giro di Sicilia from Realmonte to Piazza Armerina.
